Der vorliegende Artikel präsentiert einen kritisch überprüften Stand der Technik von natürlich vorkommenden und synthetisch hergestellten abbaubaren Polymermaterialien, die für theranostische Anwendungen untersucht werden, wobei der Schwerpunkt insbesondere auf Technologien zur kontrollierten Wirkstoffabgabe und Gewebezüchtung liegt. Der Übersichtsartikel beleuchtet die Herkunft, Klassifizierung, Eigenschaften und Anwendungen einer Vielzahl natürlich vorkommender geladener Biomakromoleküle wie Alginsäure, Pektin, Xanthate Gum, Hylarunsäure und Chitosan sowie deren Derivate. Darüber hinaus werden auch synthetische Polymere mit Abbaueigenschaften wie aliphatische Polyester, Poly(orthoester) usw. behandelt. Die Rolle dieser Polymere in theranostischen Anwendungen wird besonders hervorgehoben, wobei ihr Einsatz in der kontrollierten Wirkstofffreisetzung und im Tissue Engineering besonders betont wird. Außerdem werden die aktuellen Herausforderungen und Zukunftsaussichten in diesem Bereich diskutiert.
