Esta obra maestra de la literatura medieval española conoció su versión definitiva en Zaragoza en 1508, pero en realidad es muy anterior, ya que desde el siglo XIV existían tres de los cuatro libros finales, tal y como señala el canciller Pedro López de Ayala. Fue Garci Rodríguez de Montalvo quien añadió una cuarte parte al original y lo publicó con el título de Los cuatro libros del virtuoso caballero Amadís de Gaula. Perteneciente al género de los libros de caballerías, que tuvieron un enorme éxito en España durante el siglo XVI, el libro comienza con el amor entre el rey Perión de Gaula y la princesa Elisena de Bretaña, que da lugar al nacimiento de un niño al que abandonan en una barca y es criado por el caballero Gandales. El protagonista, al que persigue el mago Arcalús, cuenta con la protección de la hechicera Urganda o la Desconocida ya que nunca se presenta con la misma cara ni el mismo aspecto y, entre otras aventuras, tiene que viajar a Ínsula Firme, enfretarse al monstruo Endriago o conquistar a su amada Oriana.
