Estos personajes, más que una ejemplificación de dos teorías contrapuestas, representan diferentes perspectivas para interpretar el pequeño universo en el que se mueven.La humanidad y complejidad de Belarmino y Apolonio es contemplada por el autor con una lente crítica y a la vez humorística. Por demás, el romance quebrado que mantienen la hija del primero, Angustias, y el hijo del segundo, el seminarista Pedro (o Guillén) da para mucho.
