Cartas filosóficas reúne una selección de las Epístolas morales a Lucilio, escritas por Lucio Anneo Séneca y dirigidas a su joven amigo y discípulo, que era procurador imperial en la provincia de Sicilia en aquellos años finales de la vida de Séneca. Las epístolas son de contenido filosófico y filiación estoica y en gran parte están presentadas como las respuestas del maestro a problemas de orden teórico o práctico (de pensamiento o de conducta) que le habría planteado su joven amigo. En ellas se encierra la peculiar versión del estoicismo que es la filosofía de Séneca. Estas Cartas filosóficas constituyen un texto muy romano, no sólo por la frecuente referencia a aspectos de la vida del autor y del destinatario (viajes, costumbres, personajes, historias, tradiciones, etc.), sino por la seriedad moral y el sentido de la responsabilidad social del sapiens que en ellas se dibuja y por las citas literarias que esmaltan el texto.
