Los agentes del libro, sus lugares de trabajo y sus iniciativas de interacción transnacional son los protagonistas de este libro. Distintos y distantes entre sí, pero permeados por un deseo común de atacar la incomunicación intelectual entre las repúblicas latinoamericanas, estos agentes propiciaron mecanismos novedosos y provechosos de intercambio que, basados generalmente en el canje de libros y lecturas, lograron poner en diálogo a las distintas ciudades letradas de la región. Las experiencias de estos agentes, que operaron desde bibliotecas y librerías, pero también desde talleres de imprenta, pioneras casas editoriales y residencias consulares, son reconstruidas aquí, al igual que la historia de los espacios de producción y diseminación libresca que fundaron o dinamizaron; historia sin la cual es imposible entender la evolución de los intereses comunicativos que caracterizaron su accionar entre mediados del siglo XIX y las primeras décadas del siglo XX. Conexiones libreras propone así una historia de los intercambios culturales en América Latina que se aleja de la nomenclatura letrada para privilegiar los individuos y grupos que hicieron materialmente posible la comunicación intelectual a nivel continental. Una historia donde los intercambios delinean no una república continental de las letras sino una de los libros y los impresos, tan participativa en los procesos de construcción nacional como en la búsqueda de mecanismos para contrarrestar la ignorancia mutua que atravesaba el vecindario. 10
