No século XX, devido à revolução da informação e da comunicação, os resíduos electrónicos tornaram-se um motivo de preocupação na maioria dos países em desenvolvimento, como a Índia. Os resíduos electrónicos constituem um grave perigo para a saúde humana e o ambiente. De acordo com os dados do Global E-waste Monitor 2017, a Índia ocupa o quarto lugar na produção de resíduos electrónicos. Na Índia, Maharashtra ocupa o primeiro lugar, com a cidade de Mumbai, a maior geradora de resíduos electrónicos. Karnataka ocupa o sétimo lugar, sendo Bangalore a terceira cidade com maior produção de resíduos electrónicos. Os resíduos electrónicos referem-se a equipamentos eléctricos e electrónicos antigos que chegaram ao fim da sua vida útil e que contêm numerosas toxinas. Se não forem eliminados de forma adequada, podem causar poluição ambiental e riscos para a saúde.
