What are the conscious or hidden choices people make when they find themselves living in a society defined by legalised racism? How does this life, this first homeland, impact upon the years that follow - their psychic ambiguities of migration and identity, of leaving and settling - patterns carried within an extended family since the years before WWII and then the poet’s later migration in 1977 to England, and then to Australia in 1981, where she has lived ever since. The poems of in Dislocations reflect on a life lived growing up as a white child and young adult during the years of South Africa’s Apartheid era. It is a project of remembering; a returning to an earlier life viewed now from the perspective of adulthood - a personal truth-telling.
