Obwohl sie in der Regel nur als marginal mit den wichtigsten akademischen Zielen der Etablierung von Ansprüchen und Reputation in Verbindung gebracht werden, werden Danksagungen als Genre im akademischen Diskurs häufig verwendet, um Dankbarkeit für den Beitrag einer Person oder Institution auszudrücken, damit Autoren eine günstige akademische und soziale Position etablieren können. Unter Berücksichtigung der Bedeutung von Danksagungen in akademischen Schriften und der Tatsache, dass im iranischen akademischen Kontext bisher wenig bis gar nichts unternommen wurde, um Danksagungen in Dissertationen hervorzuheben, untersuchte die vorliegende Studie in der ersten Phase die generische Struktur nach Swales (1990) und in der zweiten Phase, gestützt auf die von Arundale (2006) vorgeschlagenen Face-Theorie auf die Höflichkeitsstrategien von 70 Danksagungen in Doktorarbeiten, die von persischen Muttersprachlern (NSP) und englischen Muttersprachlern (NSE) verfasst wurden.
