En un barrio no muy concurrido de la ciudad, los vecinos se extrañan por el olor que sale de una casa, así que llaman a las autoridades pertinentes.No pasa mucho tiempo cuando llegan no solo estas, sino también los familiares de una mujer anciana, quien al parecer ha decidido terminar con su vida. Pese a ser una mujer analfabeta, criada en la década de 1940 donde el contexto del país no favorece la educación para las mujeres, en la escena se halla el manuscrito que daría cuenta de las razones de esta decisión. Según el relato, todo comienza cuando decide beber la sangre de un buitre o chulo, según lenguaje popular, a fin de conseguir un remedio para curar el cáncer. En el relato se describen los personajes que hicieron parte de sus últimos días, al parecer productos de su imaginación según el diagnóstico en el último reporte médico. No obstante, las memorias ajenas o imaginarias, que esta mujer anciana adquiere, le permiten no solo aprender a leer y a escribir, sino también a desarrollar habilidades complejas, como operaciones matemáticas, tocar el piano o el violín.Martín, un joven con una extraordinaria sensibilidad, será el responsable de transmitir por medio de la sangre el folklore agridulce de algunas regiones de Colombia, las cuales se relatan en medio de la complejidad de sus emociones. En otras palabras, las memorias ajenas que se narran en el manuscrito de Amelia, describen tradiciones y costumbres que acompañan elfolklore colombiano: festividades sustentadas en laepicaricacia, es decir, la satisfacción por el sufrimiento de otros, y cuyas historias han moldeado el comportamiento de esta región.En paralelo, Abigail, la abuela de Martín, y otros personajes representan desde sus relatos propios, la manera como se percibe el mundo cuando no hay una ciencia que explique enfermedades humillantes, la muerte o la intangibilidad de los sentimientos. Desde un abanico de colores, el manuscrito intenta materializar emociones como la epicaricacia, la acrimonia entre otros demonios que aparecen en las vivencias de sus dolientes, y finalmente el relato insoportable que le lleva a terminar con su vida.
