Este livro apresenta uma análise do atual sistema de AIA na Nigéria no que diz respeito à sua eficácia na gestão ambiental do Delta do Níger. Foram investigadas alternativas para fortalecer o atual sistema de AIA através da adoção de uma abordagem regional de gestão ambiental para o Delta do Níger. Consequentemente, descobriu-se que a sobreposição de autoridades e responsabilidades entre ministérios e a falta de recursos nas principais agências têm sérias implicações para a gestão ambiental e a aplicação da lei. Várias medidas foram propostas para fortalecer a atual estrutura de gestão ambiental na Nigéria. Foi proposta a utilização da Avaliação Ambiental Estratégica e o cumprimento das normas dos Sistemas de Gestão Ambiental (ISO 14001), bem como a inclusão de agências governamentais regionais, estaduais e locais relevantes na gestão ambiental do Delta do Níger. O papel do governo na gestão ambiental eficaz na Nigéria, com especial referência ao Delta do Níger, também foi discutido neste livro. São discutidos os fatores que prejudicam a eficácia do sistema de AIA na proteção dos impactos das atividades petrolíferas e gasíferas no ambiente do Delta do Níger.
