In the 1960s, Vatican II brought renewed grace and blessing for many within the Catholic Church. For me personally, it also brought the experience of God’s healing power in the Eucharist, increasing my love of mass and personal prayer life. As a mother of young children, I was then invited by my parish priest to become a catechist; this in turn led to serving Christ as a Eucharistic minister and becoming more involved in the work of Christian Unity. What I have been shown time and again is that throughout our ordinary everyday lives, the Light of Christ never goes out. This book shares some of the insights the Mother of Jesus gives on our journey. Mary, who first followed her Son, today helps to walk in the Light of her Son, supporting and guiding as the model of faithfulness.

‘There’s a touch of both Dickinson and Larkin in Jennifer Chrystie’s mature exhumation of the tales and tropes of family. Figures who could so easily flit like phantoms in her well honed poetry are palpably enjoying an after-life in the poet’s ability to redeem through deep understanding. The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...

    Edward V Bonner
The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....

  • The Truth about A
    Maureen O'Shaughnessy
In his interpretation of Antigone, Seamus Heaney says, ‘Nobody can be sure they are always right.’ Maureen O’Shaughnessy’s The Truth about A further attends to this idea through various readings of the myth as portrayed by Sophocles, Brecht, Ted Hughes, Anne Carson and, most particularly, Euripides. Set in contemporary Sydney, among a fictional underworld family, The Truth abou...

A pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1998 involved going to places which have remained largely unchanged since before Jesus walked upon the earth; and a visit to the Holy Land can but enrich a love of the Gospels by going to where Jesus was conceived, to where He was born, to where He prayed and carried out His ministry as the Messiah. As someone who has personally experienced the ...

The Psalms enter God?s heart, reaching from the height and depth of our being. What makes the Psalms so especially relevant to our prayer life is that they were part of the prayer life of Jesus, hallowed words prayed to His Father in Heaven. The beautiful surroundings of the Santa Barbara Mission in California lend themselves to contemplating the splendour of creation and the m...

When we hear a second-hand account of an event or a conversation, its true content can be distorted. When we read a biography we gain an insight into, rather than a full impression of, a person’s life. In the Gospels, Jesus as if gives us His autobiography, speaking in the first person saying 'I Am', giving His own testimony, His true account. Scripture tells us that ’In Him al...

In the Virgin Mary, God revealed His power in a way we cannot rationalise but in faith believe. God took flesh in the way that spoke of His patience down through the ages and in ’The Immaculate Conception’ revealed His choice, reminding us that through her Son we too are called and chosen. God not only presents the holy Virgin as a model of discipleship, but reveals ever more o...
