Im Herbstsalon von 1863 stellte Edouard Manet sein Gemälde „Déjeuner sur L’herbe“ aus und löste damit einen Skandal aus, der die Geburtswehen eines neuen Stils auslöste: Der Impressionismus entstand in Paris. Im selben Jahr bildete sich in Russland eine Gruppe von Künstlern, die ein ähnliches Programm wie die französischen Maler verfolgten. Sie nahmen ihre Staffeleien mit nach draußen und versuchten, das Licht auf ihren Leinwänden einzufangen. 1907 wurden die Künstler der „Fauves“ und der „Nabis“ zum ersten Mal in Russland ausgestellt. Im selben Jahr präsentierten einige junge russische Künstler ihre Werke unter dem Titel „Die Blaue Rose“. Unter diesem Namen schlossen sich die Maler Pavel Kuznetsow, Martiros Sarjan, die Bühnenbildner Nikolai Sapunow und Sergei Sudeikin, die Zeichner Anatoli Arapow und Nikolali Feofilaktow sowie die Bildhauer Alexander Matwew und Piotr Bromirski zu einer Gruppe zusammen, die in den folgenden Jahren Ausstellungen der französischen Impressionisten und Post-Impressionisten organisierte.
