It is likely that almost everything you think you know about ALS is wrong. Those who experience ALS embark on a difficult journey, dragging their families and friends along with them. The author suffered the first symptoms in 2012, was diagnosed in 2015 (two months before his 45th college reunion) and began this book in 2025, writing with his eyes (using the Tobii Dynavox). Over ten years, he has experienced ALS, been treated for ALS, participated in ALS chat groups and written about ALS and read about ALS. Here, he offers what he has learned for the benefit of fellow travelers and those who care for or love them. This is not a medical or scientific discourse, but a down-to-earth human to human dialogue, addressing most of the important questions that will arise during the struggle with this physical, mental and emotional challenge. This book provides the information that your doctor, neurologist or, at least, someone should supply to every person receiving a diagnosis of ALS for themselves or a loved one.

I have now written over 700 pages about political/social matters and 900 pages on science. But, I keep on reading and thinking, and new issues and different perspectives keep arising, with no end in sight. So, I return to the practice of collecting the first versions of new essays in modest-sized books as part of my Wanderings series. As long as I continue to wonder, I shall co...

The four books in my Wanderings series contain many essays on politicized topics. I call it 'Politics,' based on an unusual definition attributed to the late Christopher Boehm, formerly t...

  • Disappointments

Disappointment.  It comes in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes, we see it coming, or, even invite it; sometimes, it takes us by surprise. It can be a shock or a relief. So, that is my theme for this tiny volume. I am still wandering. Any writer of nonfiction will look for an angle, a theme, a perspective, that will give his book a claim of originality, of making a contribution to...

My father grew up on a small farm in a very small town in northwestern Ohio, appropriately called Hicksville. Its claim to fame is that it is mentioned in Huckleberry Finn. My mother’s father during the 1930s worked at the YMCA so that his family could eat meals in the cafeteria. That was his pay. My parents both graduated from Ohio State University. They married right after my...

These essays are on topics reflecting the intersection of science and humankind. They concern time, consciousness, beauty, probability, and understanding. They supplement and compliment my book Important Things We Don’t Know (About Nearly Everything) and are presented here as an accompaniment to that book. But, this volume can stand on its own. For several years, I periodically...
