En Naufragios, Alvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca relata las peripecias y desventuras de la expedición de Pánfilo de Narváez en busca de la prodigiosa Fuente de la juventud eterna. El grupo zarpó de San Lúcar de Barrameda integrado por unos 600 hombres.Tras pasar por la Española y Cuba muchos abandonaron aquella aventura. Los que decidieron continuar marcharon a la Florida, iniciando un viaje alucinante de tres mil kilómetros durante ocho años por el sur de los actuales Estados Unidos y el norte de México.Enfrentaron numerosos ataques de los habitantes de aquellos territorios, huracanes, hambre, enfermedades endémicas y fueron víctimas del canibalismo y la esclavitud. Encontraron también la amistad de otros lugareños y aprendieron sus costumbres y algo de sus lenguas.Al final de esta aventura solo quedaron con vida Alvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, Castillo, Dorantes y Estebanico. Este último llamado el moro, fue el primer hombre nacido en África que llegó a los Estados Unidos.En 1537 lograron llegar a la colonia de Nueva Galicia, en el Virreinato de Nueva España, y allí terminó el viaje americano de Naufragios.
