Tras un largo período viajando a través del tiempo y el espacio, los servicios de Demonion son requeridos de nuevo por la Flota Estelar. En el gobierno de la Confederación Galáctica existen corrientes de opinión favorables a considerar fracasada la mutación genética que dotó de inteligencia superior a unos primates terrestres, creando la especie humana. Aumentan entonces los partidarios del exterminio, horrorizados por las noticias recibidas de la Tierra. Con objeto de comprobar tales hechos y adoptar la decisión definitiva, se encomienda a Demonion la misión de viajar a diferentes épocas concretas de la historia terrestre e informar al respecto, después de comprobar personalmente determinados hechos. Simultáneamente, deberá investigar un posible delito de contrabando interplanetario, así como una supuesta filtración de información que podría haberse originado en la propia Flota Estelar.
