Zamki są połączone drutami ortodontycznymi, zwanymi łukami, dzięki czemu mogą być przemieszczane wraz z zębami za pomocą systemów sprężyn i kotwic z różnych materiałów, połączonych za pomocą różnych procesów. Powoduje to powstanie ogniwa galwanicznego i uwalnianie niklu przez aparat, co wywołuje alergię. Celem tej pracy było zastosowanie techniki anod ofiarnych stosowanej do katodowej ochrony konstrukcji metalowych narażonych na działanie środowiska słonego. Technika ta została zastosowana do ochrony stali nierdzewnej i jej połączeń z innymi metalami stosowanymi w leczeniu ortodontycznym, nie w celu ochrony konstrukcji, ale w celu ochrony jamy ustnej przed uszkodzeniami spowodowanymi przez nikiel. Ilość uwolnionego niklu była poniżej granicy wykrywalności sprzętu do elektrochemicznej absorpcji atomowej, który został wykorzystany w niniejszej pracy. Potwierdza to skuteczność metody ochrony katodowej w zmniejszaniu uwalniania niklu przez aparaty ortodontyczne ze stali nierdzewnej.
