O nariz humano é um instrumento altamente sensível, capaz de distinguir centenas de odores, mas não consegue detetar as concentrações absolutas de gases ou gases inodoros. Por conseguinte, é necessário desenvolver um dispositivo de deteção artificial para apoiar o nariz humano. O apoio é desejado em aplicações de segurança em que estão presentes gases combustíveis ou tóxicos e em aplicações de conforto, tais como controlos climáticos de edifícios e veículos em que é necessária uma boa qualidade do ar. Por conseguinte, a monitorização de gases é necessária no controlo de processos e na análise laboratorial. O desenvolvimento de sensores de gás para monitorizar gases tóxicos e combustíveis é imperativo para a poluição ambiental e os requisitos de segurança das indústrias. De um modo geral, o sensor proporciona uma interface entre o equipamento eletrónico e o mundo físico, convertendo normalmente quantidades físicas ou químicas não eléctricas em sinais eléctricos.
