She is widely hailed as being among the most influential modernist authors of the 20th century and a pioneer of stream of consciousness narration. Woolf was a central figure in the feminist criticism movement of the 1970s, her works having inspired countless women to take up the cause. She suffered numerous nervous breakdowns during her life primarily as a result of the deaths of family members, and it is now believed that she may have suffered from bipolar disorder. In 1941, Woolf drowned herself in the River Ouse at Lewes, aged 59. Other notable works by this author include: 'Pattledom' (1925), 'A Room of One’s Own' (1929), and 'The Waves' (1931). Read & Co. Great Essays is publishing this brand new collection of classic essays now complete with a specially-commissioned biography of the author.

  • Mr. Bennett and Mrs. Brown
    Virginia Woolf
The author penned the article in 1923 and first presented it to the Heretics in 1924. The essay is an argumentative piece that tries to go beyond Arnold Bennett’s thesis that characters are what novels are all about, and his too-simple explanation for why young writers haven’t been able to make their characters seem real. Woolf picks 1910 as the year when things start to change...

  • The Voyage Out
    Virginia Woolf
Woolf began work on The Voyage Out by 1910 (perhaps as early as 1907) and had finished an early draft by 1912. The novel had a long and difficult gestation; it was not published until 1915, as it was written during a period in which Woolf was psychologically vulnerable. She suffered from periods of depression and, at one point, attempted suicide.[2] The resultant work contained...
