Se centra en cómo las polémicas de Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo, cronista oficial de Indias, particularmente con Bartolomé de las Casas, moldearon su Historia general y natural de las Indias. Dirigido a especialistas, académicos, estudiantes y público en general interesado en la historia.La obra de Fernández de Oviedo, motivada tanto por el deseo de conocimiento y los preceptos de la Historia natural de Plinio el Viejo como por los objetivos imperiales de la colonización, creó un inventario de la riqueza americana que complementaba el Viejo Mundo. A pesar de describir la naturaleza exuberante de América, la escritura del cronista también representaba el espacio y sus habitantes como viciosos y quiméricos.El texto de Fernández de Oviedo sobre los pueblos conquistados es flexible, en tanto que estuvo orientada histórica y políticamente. El cronista propuso al caballero andante como un elemento civilizador e integrador, abogando por una sociedad jerárquica tanto entre españoles como entre indígenas.En esencia, los cronistas y funcionarios de la corte de Carlos V debatían el futuro del Nuevo Mundo. La Historia general y natural de Fernández de Oviedo, a pesar de su detalle, legitimó la soberanía imperial sobre las Indias al utilizar y distorsionar los ideales del humanismo europeo. Este volumen analiza los recursos retóricos del autor para describir (y a veces criticar) la fama de algunos conquistadores como “mártires” de la conquista, los naufragios que implicaba el viaje a las Indias y la heráldica como valor de distinción.Es una lectura fundamental para entender la complejidad de la historiografía del Nuevo Mundo y su impacto duradero. 10
