When a child or young person is placed in a care home, this is not only a life-changing experience for them. The young person’s parents also find the placement in care a deeply affecting experience. If the child or young person could not be ’kept’ at home, this inevitably triggers strong emotions in the parents. Residential care today is no longer just about the upbringing of the young person, but also involves the parents. Working with parents is a fundamental part of modern residential care and will be the central focus of this paper.
