如果「存在」從來就不是一件需要努力才能獲得的事呢?從小到大,我們被教導一個簡單的道理:努力工作。做出貢獻。創造價值。得到自己應得的東西。久而久之,這個道理開始變成另一種信念。我們開始把工作與價值連在一起,把生產力與尊嚴連在一起,把貢獻與獲得的資格連在一起。但是,這個信念之中存在著一個矛盾。一個剛出生的嬰兒,沒有工作,沒有收入,沒有成就,也沒有任何經濟貢獻。然而,沒有人會問:他是否已經有資格吃飯?是否已經有資格得到照顧?是否已經有資格活著?因為我們其實早已知道一件更根本的事:人的價值,先於經濟價值。《不勞而獲》從這個簡單的矛盾開始,追問一個與文明同樣古老的問題:國家為什麼存在?沒有人真正從零開始。我們繼承了語言、法律、教育、醫療、道路、科學、科技、制度、市場,以及數千年累積下來的知識。這些都不是我們創造的。然而,我們今天幾乎所有的成就,都建立在它們之上。從出生的那一刻開始,我們便開始繼承一個由前人建立的世界。我們只是把它稱為:文明。這種繼承,並不否定私人財產。個人創造的成果,可以屬於個人。房屋、企業、存款、投資、專利、著作,與公共基礎建設、法律制度、公共知識,以及一代又一代人累積下來的文明成果,本來就是兩種不同的財富。一種是私人財富。另一種是公共財富。理解這條界線,也就重新理解了「不勞而獲」真正可以代表的意義。它同時改變了我們對國民身分的理解。國家不是公司。國民不是客戶。市場可以獎勵贏家。企業可以選擇客戶。但國家不能用同樣的方法對待自己的人民。一個人不是因為成功才成為國民。失敗,也不會讓一個人失去歸屬。人工智慧的出現,使這些問題變得更加迫切。當機器愈來愈能夠寫作、設計、編寫程式、分析、診斷、研究、製造與管理,工作與生存之間維持了數千年的關係,也可能開始鬆動。如果有一天,機器完成了文明所需要的大量工作,人類將面對一個比就業更加根本的問題:如果工作不再證明我們的用途,那麼,什麼才能證明我們的價值?也許,根本不需要證明。也許人從來不是因為有用,才具有價值。而是因為存在,所以具有價值。《不勞而獲》是一部關於勞動、財富、國民、文明、人的尊嚴,以及國家存在理由的大眾哲學作品。它最終追問的是:如果一個國家能夠保護財富,卻不能保護生命;能夠獎勵成功,卻不能保障存在--那麼,國家究竟是為了什麼而存在?
