Die Weizenproduktion in Äthiopien hat in den letzten 20 Jahren erheblich zugenommen. Obwohl die Schätzungen je nach Datenquelle variierten, bestätigten alle untersuchten Quellen denselben allgemeinen Trend. Die Getreidemärkte in Äthiopien zeichnen sich jedoch durch eine große Anzahl von Vermarktungsagenten mit unterschiedlichen Einkaufs-, Lagerungs- und Transportkapazitäten sowie Marktanteilen aus. Daher sind nicht alle diese Akteure auf allen Märkten gleichermaßen aktiv. Außerdem blieben die Vermarktungsmargen und Transaktionskosten hoch, die Kapazitäten des Privatsektors sind begrenzt, die Marktinstitutionen sind schwach und die Marktinfrastruktur blieb ein grundlegendes Problem des Vermarktungssystems. Diese Studie soll die bestehende Informationslücke zu diesem Thema schließen, zu einem besseren Verständnis der Herausforderungen beitragen und bei der Entwicklung verbesserter Marktentwicklungsstrategien zum Nutzen von Kleinbauern, Händlern und anderen Marktteilnehmern helfen.
