A podridão vermelha é a doença mais destrutiva da cana-de-açúcar no Bangladesh e causa grandes perdas financeiras aos produtores de cana-de-açúcar. Este estudo foi realizado para caraterizar os isolados de Colletotrichum falcatum da cana-de-açúcar recolhidos em diferentes regiões do Bangladesh com base em caraterísticas morfológicas e moleculares. As sequências dos quatro genes, nomeadamente o espaçador interno transcrito (ITS-rDNA), a β-tubulina, a actina e a glaceraldeído -3 fosfato desidrogenase (GAPDH), apresentaram uma semelhança de 99-100% com as sequências de genes conservados na base de dados GenBank. A análise filogenética dos quatro genes revelou que os isolados de C.falcatum do Bangladesh estavam agrupados no mesmo clado e não apresentavam distinções geográficas diferentes dos isolados de outros países. Os marcadores ISSR determinaram a baixa diversidade genética dos isolados de C. falcatum no Bangladeche. Os níveis de virulência dos 41 isolados de C. falcatumcorrespondentes à reação à doença na planta hospedeira foram classificados em três grupos principais: virulento, moderadamente virulento e menos virulento. Os sete hospedeiros diferenciais da cana-de-açúcar foram classificados como resistentes, moderadamente resistentes e susceptíveis.
