La malattia del marciume rosso è la più distruttiva della canna da zucchero in Bangladesh e causa importanti perdite finanziarie ai coltivatori di canna da zucchero. Questo studio è stato condotto per caratterizzare gli isolati di Colletotrichum falcatum della canna da zucchero raccolti in diverse regioni del Bangladesh sulla base di caratteristiche morfologiche e molecolari. Le sequenze dei quattro geni, ovvero lo spaziatore trascritto interno (ITS-rDNA), la β-tubulina, l’actina e la glaceraldeide -3 fosfato deidrogenasi (GAPDH), hanno mostrato una somiglianza del 99-100% con le sequenze geniche conservate nel database di GenBank. L’analisi filogenetica dei quattro geni ha rivelato che gli isolati di C.falcatum del Bangladesh erano raggruppati nello stesso clade e non presentavano distinzioni geografiche rispetto agli isolati di altri Paesi. I marcatori ISSR hanno determinato la bassa diversità genetica degli isolati di C. falcatum in Bangladesh. I livelli di virulenza dei 41 isolati di C. falcatumcorrispondenti alla reazione della malattia sulla pianta ospite sono stati classificati in tre gruppi principali: virulento, moderatamente virulento e poco virulento. I sette ospiti differenziali della canna da zucchero sono stati classificati come resistenti, moderatamente resistenti e suscettibili.
