Vida cotidiana, mentalidades sociales o aspectos económicos se conjugan con normas penales, procedimientos judiciales y la política de orden público para presentar un cuadro general de la delincuencia y de la justicia penal en el Reino de Valencia durante los siglos XVI y XVII. Los delitos y las infracciones que atentan contra la vida de las personas (homicidios, lesiones, «escopetades».) son los que tendrán un mayor protagonismo. Se analizan, también, los rasgos legislativos y procesales, la estructura de los tribunales, las dificultades en la averiguación del delito y la detención de los culpables, los métodos de actuación («composición», proceso penal) para aplicarles un castigo y la imposición de penas, en las que se aúnan las prescripciones legales, el arbitrio judicial y las necesidades o circunstancias de la sociedad. Subyace la tendencia a controlar los hábitos tradicionales de violencia, un hipertrofiado sentido del honor, la inclinación a la venganza en un ambiente con gran difusión de armas, un espíritu anárquico e impulsivo, unido con frecuencia a fuertes lazos clientelares («bandositats»), junto a viejos y conocidos males sociales (robos, prostitución, juegos, etc.). En el nombre del rey, las instituciones de gobierno, y singularmente las judiciales, intentarán domeñar tales comportamientos y disciplinar a una población levantisca y rebelde.
