La magnétohydrodynamique décrit la dynamique d’un fluide qui interagit avec un champ magnétique. Ce sujet est d’une importance capitale pour la dynamique des missiles et des engins spatiaux, les communications de propulsion et les générateurs d’énergie. Les flux hydromagnétiques sont également présents en astrophysique et en géophysique. Certaines longueurs caractéristiques revêtent une importance considérable dans la MHD. Il s’agit de la longueur caractéristique de Debye et du rayon de Larmor - le rayon de la trajectoire d’une particule chargée se déplaçant dans un champ magnétique et transverse aux lignes de champ. Le rayon de Larmor est également connu sous le nom de rayon gyroscopique et de rayon cyclotronique. Ces quantités sont utiles pour la description des phénomènes MHD dans la magnétohydrodynamique. Le concept de base de l’électromagnétisme est la loi de Coulomb pour la force exercée sur une particule chargée dans un champ électrique. La loi de Coulomb stipule que 'la force exercée sur une particule chargée est proportionnelle au produit de la charge et du champ électrique local perçu par la particule'. Lorsqu’une particule chargée se déplace en présence d’un champ électrique et magnétique arbitraire, la force qui en résulte est appelée force de Lorentz.
