Die Magnetohydrodynamik beschreibt die Dynamik einer Flüssigkeit, die mit einem Magnetfeld wechselwirkt. Dieses Thema ist von größter Bedeutung für die Dynamik von Raketen und Raumfahrzeugen, für die Antriebskommunikation und für Stromgeneratoren. Hydromagnetische Strömungen kommen auch in der Astrophysik und Geophysik vor. Es gibt einige charakteristische Längen, die in der MHD von großer Bedeutung sind. Es handelt sich dabei um die charakteristische Debye-Länge und den Larmor-Radius - den Radius der Bahn eines geladenen Teilchens, das sich in einem Magnetfeld und quer zu den Feldlinien bewegt. Der Larmor-Radius ist auch als Kreiselradius und Zyklotronradius bekannt. Diese Größen sind nützlich für die Beschreibung von MHD-Phänomenen in der Magnetohydrodynamik. Das grundlegende Konzept im Elektromagnetismus ist das Coulombsche Gesetz für die Kraft auf ein geladenes Teilchen in einem elektrischen Feld. Das Coulomb-Gesetz besagt: 'Die Kraft auf ein geladenes Teilchen ist proportional zum Produkt aus der Ladung und dem lokalen elektrischen Feld, das das Teilchen erfährt'. Wenn sich ein geladenes Teilchen in einem beliebigen elektrischen und magnetischen Feld bewegt, wird die resultierende Kraft Lorentz-Kraft genannt.
