La magnetoidrodinamica descrive la dinamica di un fluido che interagisce con un campo magnetico. Questo argomento è di primaria importanza nella dinamica dei missili e dei veicoli spaziali, nelle comunicazioni di propulsione e nei generatori di energia. I flussi idromagnetici sono presenti anche in astrofisica e geofisica. Esistono alcune lunghezze caratteristiche di notevole importanza nella MHD. Si tratta della lunghezza caratteristica di Debye e del raggio di Larmor - il raggio del percorso di una particella carica che si muove in un campo magnetico e che è trasversale alle linee di campo. Il raggio di Larmor è noto anche come raggio giroscopico e raggio ciclotrone. Queste grandezze sono utili per la descrizione dei fenomeni MHD nella magnetoidrodinamica. Il concetto di base dell’elettromagnetismo è la legge di Coulomb per la forza su una particella carica, in un campo elettrico. La legge di Coulomb afferma che 'la forza su una particella carica è proporzionale al prodotto della carica e del campo elettrico locale visto dalla particella'. Quando una particella carica si muove in presenza di un campo elettrico e magnetico arbitrario, la forza risultante è chiamata forza di Lorentz.
