Dopo il successo elettorale di Luiz Inácio 'Lula' da Silva alle elezioni presidenziali brasiliane del 2002, la maggioranza internazionale ha riconosciuto al Partito dei Lavoratori un grande potenziale di cambiamento sociale. Tuttavia, mentre il riassetto economico e finanziario del Paese non ha avuto luogo per il momento, a livello di politica sociale si sono profilati grandi cambiamenti. Poco dopo la storica vittoria elettorale, la lotta alla fame e alla povertà estrema ha dato un chiaro segnale di come si intendesse migliorare le condizioni di reddito. Negli anni successivi, ciò è stato integrato da una politica coerente del mercato del lavoro, volta a migliorare le condizioni di lavoro e l’integrazione nel sistema sociale di gran parte della popolazione brasiliana attraverso la formalizzazione dei loro rapporti di lavoro. Il presente lavoro colloca questi sviluppi nel contesto storico e cerca di determinare empiricamente come questi cambiamenti si siano riflessi in alcune categorie analitiche centrali.
