Even in the 21st century, the Roma community continues to face prejudice, stigmatisation and stereotypes. In public debates, they invariably attract negative attention. There is also structural disadvantage affecting Roma in the field of education, which manifests itself in lower educational attainment. Consequently, many Roma girls may be forced to leave school early due to early marriage. This volume seeks to explore the educational prospects of both genders by examining their respective educational aspirations. As part of this study, which examines gender roles and educational aspirations among Roma pupils from migrant backgrounds, a qualitative-empirical investigation based on 16 interviews aims to explain and analyse the relationship between socio-economic factors, parents’ educational status, patriarchal structures and the academic success of Roma children.
